Mahomes and Mayfield set the FBS record for most combined offense by two players, with 1,383.
Mahomes set several Big 12 records as well, including most completions in a game (52), previously held by TTU’s Kliff Kingsbury, who’s now his head coach.
Also, Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield set a school record for passing touchdowns in a game, with seven.
Mahomes obviously shattered TTU’s own record books.
Mahomes tied Washington State’s Connor Halliday for the most individual passing yards in a Division I game, with 734 (NCAA record: 736 by Division III Eureka’s Sam Durley in 2012).
Tied the NCAA record for combined first downs in a game, with 78.
The most combined passing yardage in any NCAA game, with 1,279.
Texas Tech’s Pat Mahomes set the NCAA individual record for total offense in a game, with 819 combined passing and rushing yards.
And this game might’ve broken the all-NCAA record (1,714 by Division III Hardin-Simmons and Sul Ross State in 2012) if OU hadn’t kneeled in a shotgun formation twice to end the game.
The most combined yardage in a Division I game, with 1,708 between both teams.
There have been games with more points, but no game in the history of major college football has ever involved more yardage. What is staggering is how these teams arrived at that total. That alone isn’t all that surprising of a score, seeing as this is the defense-optional Big 12, these two teams have elite skill players, and stuff gets weird at night in Lubbock.
